With the introduction of PinSeeker, PinHunter and First Target technology, laser rangefinders have become much easier to use than their predecessors. A laser rangefinder can improve your game in many ways from knowing how far you hit each club to measuring distances to hazards so you can avoid them. Below are reviews of the top three golf laser rangefinders on the market today.
Bushnell PinSeeker 1500
The PinSeeker 1500 is relatively large with dimensions of 5.1 x 3.7 x 1.7 inches making it difficult to carry in your pocket so you have to carry it in your golf bag or cart. It is also relatively heavy at 10 ounces but is well worth the added size and weight since it is extremely effective and easy to use.
Using PinSeeker mode you can point it around the flag until it locks onto its target. It has a very strong laser compared to other rangefinders that can’t measure flags past 150 yards unless the flag is very reflective.
It will read distances as far as 1,500 yards away for reflective surfaces, 1,000 yards for large objects such as trees and 400 yards for small objects such as flags (flag must be a reflective color such as white). It comes with 7x magnification which is almost too much zoom.
It has RainGuard coating to prevent external lens fogging and is waterproof. It has a rubber coating making easy to grip. It operates on only a 9 volt battery which is nice since you can pick one up at just about any convenience store.
The PinSeeker 1500 comes in two models: tournament and slope. Tournament edition is legal for USGA tournament and handicap play while Slope edition adjusts distances for slope and not legal.
Callaway LR800
The Callaway LR800 is compact with dimensions of 5 x 1.5 x 2.8 inches making it small enough to fit in your pocket. It is also lightweight at 7.4oz. It has a max range of 800 yards which is short compared to the PinSeeker 1500 but plenty of distance for golf. It comes with First Target technology, which is basically the same as PinSeeker technology, making it very easy to get yardage to any object quickly.
Like the PinSeeker 1500 it also comes with Scan mode which allows for distancing different targets with continuous updates of the yardage. It has an LCD with a backlight which is great for those dark conditions.
The LR800 runs on a CR2 lithium battery which is included. It is waterproof and fogproof which is useful for those early morning golfers. Comes with a very nice neoprene sport case with clip. It comes with 6x magnification. It displays in .5-yard increments making it very accurate.
Leupold GX-II
The GX-II is very compact with dimensions of 4 x 2.7 x 1.5 inches and very lightweight at 6.8 ounces. It is compact enough to fit nicely in your pocket. Comes with a carrying case and strap. Unlike the PinSeeker 1500 and LR800 it is not waterproof or fogproof and is only water resistant. It has PinHunter technology, which is the same as PinSeeker and First Target technology, making it very easy to get distances to any object.
The GX-II also comes with True Golf Range which computes the distance to the pin taking into consideration uphill/downhill angle, temperature and elevation. It even has Club Selector which uses distances inputted by the user to recommend the proper club. It only ranges distances up to 350 yards but that should be enough since most golfers can’t hit this far anyway.
